Botanical name: Illicium verum
We handcraft our Roasted Stoneground Star Anise using Organic whole Star Anise sourced from Sri Lanka to ensure purity and quality of our product.
The whole Star Anise is freshly dry roasted on an iron skillet, on receipt of your order. A traditional roasting technique is used to ensure consistency and uniformity of the roasting. The roasted spice is then stoneground to produce a spice with an intense and sweet and spicy flavour. Stoneground spices have a naturally uneven, earthy texture that adds a rustic mouth feel. This is immediately packed in a recyclable, amber coloured, glass jar, with an airtight induction seal, to maximise freshness of the product – you will get an intense sweet and spicy aroma of fresh roasted and ground Star Anise when you open the jar. It adds sophisticated and complex layers of flavour to a dish.
Star Anise is a star shaped spice mainly used in Asian cooking. It is the dried pod from the fruit of the Illicium verum plant, an evergreen tree of Magnolia family native to Southwest China. The pods have six to eight prongs, each containing a single seed. Star Anise is predominantly used in many Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian and Indonesian cuisines. It is used in Eastern cuisines similarly to the use of Aniseed in Western cuisines.
Ground Star Anise is a key ingredient in Chinese Five-Spice blend and Vietnamese pho. It’s also part of the Port Royal flavour profile – a mixture of chocolate, grapefruit, and star anise. Use as a rub ingredient for roast pork or beef. It can also be added to cinnamon-sugar mixture of cinnamon rolls.
Roasted Stoneground Star Anise pairs with beef, chicken, ducks, eggs, fish, figs, leek, pears, pork, pumpkin, root vegetables, shrimp, soy sauce and tropical fruit. It is a classic companion with tomato-based sauce or stew adding a warm, spicy undertone. It is a key ingredient in Pho, a Vietnamese noodle soup and Indian/Middle Eastern rice dish – Biryani.
Star Anise combines well with Chilli, Cinnamon, Citrus, Coriander seed, Fennel seed, Garlic, Ginger, Lemongrass, Nutmeg and Sichuan Peppercorns.
