Description
Botanical Name: Foeniculum vulgare
Fennel Seed is the dried fruit of the fennel plant, a cherished member of the Apiaceae family and a staple across Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Indian kitchens. Native to the warm coastal regions of the Mediterranean, fennel seed develops a natural sweetness with a clean anise-like lift.
Our certified organic fennel seed is sourced from India, where the seeds grow straighter, smaller and naturally sweeter than their European counterparts. Fresh green seeds offer the brightest aroma, while more mature seeds mellow into warm, soothing sweetness.
Quality checked and packed in our gluten-free Sydney facility, these whole seeds retain their natural oils and fragrance, ready for tempering, blooming, roasting or grinding in your kitchen.
Flavour & Aroma Profile
Warm, sweet, gently anise-like with soft herbal tones.
When toasted or crushed: deeper sweetness with a mellow, rounded aroma.
How to Use
- Use ½–1 tsp per dish to gently season vegetables, lentils, curries or rice dishes
- Lightly toast before use to release sweetness and soften intensity
- Add ½ tsp per cup of cooked lentils or beans for rounded, aromatic depth
- Crush lightly for marinades, spice rubs or vegetable sautés
- Simmer whole seeds in broths, soups or stocks for a soft, sweet anise note
- Brew 1 tsp per cup of hot water for a simple fennel seed infusion, enjoyed plain after meals
Start light and adjust to taste. Fennel’s sweetness deepens as it cooks.
Perfect For
- Everyday Indian, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cooking
- Vegetable-forward meals and lentil-based dishes
- Light, aromatic curries and gently spiced rice
- After-meal rituals and calming herbal infusions
- Balancing richer or spicier dishes with natural sweetness
Wellness Note
Fennel seed’s naturally sweet, cooling aroma has long been embraced in global culinary traditions as a soothing, palate-cleansing and refreshing spice enjoyed after meals.
Across Ayurveda fennel seed (saunf) is enjoyed for its cooling, sweet and soothing nature. It is considered tridoshic: balancing for Vata, Pitta and Kapha when used in moderation.
