Botanical name: Cuminum cyminum
We handcraft our Stoneground Cumin Seed from Organic whole Cumin Seed sourced from India to ensure purity and quality of our product.
The whole Cumin Seed is freshly stoneground, on receipt of your order, to bring out an intense, musty aroma. Stoneground spices have a naturally uneven, earthy texture that adds a rustic mouth feel. This is immediately packed in a recyclable, amber coloured, glass jar, with an airtight induction seal, to maximise freshness of the product – you will get a strong pungent aroma of fresh ground Cumin Seed when you open the jar.
Cumin Seed has a distinctive earthy, nutty, spicy taste with somewhat bitter undertones and a warm, penetrating aroma with hints of lemon. Cumin is native to China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, the eastern Mediterranean, Syria and Turkey. Cumin is now also grown in Argentina, Iran and Mexico.
Ground Cumin is extensively used in cuisines around the world, particularly in Southern Asia, Northern Africa and Latin America. Ground Cumin flourishes when used with beans, curries, bread, cabbage, pungent cheeses, couscous, chicken, eggplant, lamb, lentils, onions, potatoes, rice, sauerkraut and squash. Cumin has long been a signature spice for cooks in the South Asia, Far East, Latin America, Mexico, the Middle East and North Africa. Cumin seed is often lightly fried in oil or ghee to release its flavour. Unlike whole Cumin Seed, ground Cumin does not need shallow frying and mixes into the dishes.
Cumin works well in combination with Allspice, Aniseed, Black Mustard, Cardamom, Cinnamon, Coriander, Fennel, Fenugreek, Garlic, Ginger, Nutmeg, Paprika, Turmeric and Yellow Mustard.
