Chaat Masala (or chat masala) is a complex spice mix used as a seasoning in a huge number of dishes in Indian subcontinent. “Chaat” actually means to lick, and ‘Masala” means spice. The name originates from the “chaat” vendors found selling street food all over Northern Indian.
The street food vendors garnish this spice mix over a colourful mixture of tossed vegetables, fruits and rice puffs, turning a seemingly simple snack into bite sized concoctions of contrasting flavours - funky, sour, sweet, savoury, tangy, tart and spicy. The clash of ingredients may seem a little weird, but it is incredibly tasty and moreish, loved by both kids and adults. It even works with a salad of sweet fruits with a dash of lemon juice.
There are many regional variations of the Indian Chaat Masala, but all of them have a mouth-puckering, sweet-tart note, which in our blend comes from the addition of Amchur (dried mango powder). The secret ingredient that gives Chaat Masala its unusual funky flavour is Black Salt. This volcanic salt from the Himalayas (a vegan-friendly alternative to sea salt) is completely unlike standard table salt. Black Salt is a cornerstone of Ayurvedic medicine to treat indigestion, reflux and relieving muscle cramps.
Chaat Masala adds the umami-rich flavour to dishes like omelettes, roasted or steamed potatoes, mushrooms, scrambled eggs, cheese and tofu. Try it sprinkled over snack foods, dal, sandwiches, grilled or steamed meat and vegetables, fruits or mixed into salad dressings. Just add a dash of lemon juice on top. It is even used to add a savoury zing to Indian-style fresh lemonade.
Organic Ingredients: Dried Mango Powder (Amchur), Black Salt, Cumin seed, Coriander seed, Red Chilli, Ajwain (Carom seed), Mint Leaf, Black Pepper, Ginger, Long Pepper and Cloves.
No added sweeteners, preservatives, flavourings, dairy, cacao, flour, gluten, nuts, sugar, onion, garlic
