Description
Chinese Five Spice is one of the world’s most distinctive and symbolic spice blends, rooted in ancient Chinese philosophy. The Five Elements wood, fire, earth, metal and water correspond to the five fundamental tastes sweet, sour, bitter, salty and umami. Traditional Chinese cooking has long sought this harmony, combining spices to create balance, depth and completeness in everyday dishes.
Spice Zen’s blend is made from certified organic spices, each individually hand-roasted to deepen aroma, then stone-milled in small batches at our gluten-free Sydney facility. It immediately fills the senses with layers of sweet spice, woody warmth, soft florals and a gentle liquorice note. Sealed immediately after milling, it captures the unmistakable freshness of just-ground spices.
This blend is remarkably versatile. It brings depth to classic Chinese dishes such as roast duck, pork, braised meats and stir-fries, while also appearing across Vietnamese cooking and modern Asian fusion. Its natural sweetness and warmth allow it to move easily between savoury dishes, marinades, broths and breadcrumb coatings, as well as desserts inspired by gingerbread, poached fruit and spiced baking.
