Spice Zen’s Assam Black Tea Blend is an inhouse blend of single estate, organic whole leaf and organic CTC (crush, tear, curl) tea, sourced from tea country in the hilly north eastern state of Assam, India.
As you sip, you will detect malty and floral notes that balance beautifully with a bold natural, mid-to-high strength tea flavour. This classic blend offers a full-bodied, robust profile with roasted barley notes and a mild astringent underlayer.
We use the best grade of Assam whole leaf tea in this blend – FTGFOP1 or Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe 1.
The organic Assam tea used in this blend is derived from the “second flush”. This refers to the second round of harvesting in the growing year during the summer monsoon, when the tea leaves are fully developed.
This blend is specifically created to make the ideal Masala Chai in conjunction with Spice Zen’s Masala Chai Spice Blend. Spices take longer to infuse compared with tea leaves. If brewed for too long, tea can become “stewed” or bitter tasting. Hence we do not pre-mix the spices with tea and pack them separately. Also called chai tea (which is a misnomer as chai is the Hindi language term for tea), this blend is the ideal black tea for chai.
Brewing Instructions: Add 1 teaspoon of the Spice Zen Masala Chai Spice Blend to a cup of boiling water and steep for 3 minutes. Add 1 teaspoon of the Assam Black Tea Blend and brew for 2 minutes. Strain the tea if you want a black tea. Add ¼ cup of milk and boil for another 1 minute before straining to get the perfect Masala Chai.
Loose leaf tea. Hand blended in Sydney, Australia.
Organic Ingredients: Assam Whole Leaf Black tea, Assam CTC Black tea.
No added sweeteners, preservatives, flavourings, dairy, flour, gluten, nuts, salt, sugar
