Description
Botanical name: Pittosporum angustifolium
Gumbi Gumbi, sometimes spelled Gumby Gumby and also known as Native Apricot, is a distinctive Australian native plant valued for its leaves rather than its bright orange fruit. The leaves have been traditionally gathered and brewed by First Nations communities as part of everyday bush wellness practices, seasonal rituals and self-care traditions.
Spice Zen’s Gumbi Gumbi Tea is made from whole dried leaves, carefully harvested and gently dried to preserve their natural structure and character. Using whole leaves rather than milled herb allows for a cleaner infusion and greater control over strength. When brewed, the tea produces a pale to medium amber liquor with a distinctly bitter, peppery flavour and an earthy, grounding finish.
Due to its naturally bitter profile, it is commonly softened with a touch of honey.
Hand-packed in small batches at our gluten-free Sydney facility, this native botanical tea honours the strength, resilience and heritage of Australian bush plants.
Flavour & Aroma Profile
Earthy and robust with a pronounced bitterness, peppery undertones and a grounding, herbal finish.
How to Brew
Gumbi Gumbi is traditionally brewed stronger and longer than most herbal teas.
- Use 4-5 whole leaves per litre of freshly boiled water.
- Simmer gently or steep covered for 30–60 minutes, depending on desired strength.
Strain and enjoy hot or cold.
For a stronger brew in shorter time, increase the quantity of leaves and steep for a shorter period.
Sweeten lightly with honey if desired to balance bitterness.
Tea Type
Single-ingredient Australian native botanical infusion.
Naturally caffeine-free.
Perfect For
- Traditional bush infusions
- Slow brewing rituals, Evening herbal tea

Wellness Tradition
Australian Indigenous Cultural Traditions
Traditionally, the tea was taken as part of everyday wellness practices rather than for flavour. It was commonly included in seasonal routines, periods of physical strain or when the body felt out of balance.
Gumbi Gumbi was appreciated for its strong, bitter nature and its role in cleansing, fortifying and restoring the body.
Traditional cultural usage only. Not a therapeutic claim.
