Description
Botanical Name: Illicium verum
Star anise is the dried, star shaped fruit of an evergreen tree from the magnolia family, native to Southwest China. Each pod typically forms six-to-eight-pointed segments, each holding a single glossy seed. When gently warmed or infused, the whole pod releases a distinctive aroma that is sweet, spicy and softly reminiscent of fennel and liquorice.
Spice Zen’s Certified Organic Star Anise is carefully sourced from premium growing regions in Vietnam and India, selected for its intact shape, rich colour and aromatic intensity. Using the spice whole allows its flavour to unfold slowly, adding layered warmth and complexity without overwhelming a dish.
Widely used across Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian and Indonesian cuisines, star anise plays a similar role in Eastern cooking to aniseed in Western traditions. It is especially valued in long simmered broths, rice dishes and spice blends where its sweet spice notes gently round and balance savoury flavours.
Origin
Star anise has been cultivated for centuries across East and Southeast Asia, where it became an essential spice for slow cooking, broths and festive dishes.
