Botanical Name: Alpinia galanga
Galangal Powder comes from the tough, woody rhizome of Alpinia galanga, treasured across Southeast Asia and India. Known for its sharper, sweeter and more citrus-forward character compared to ginger, galangal offers aromas of pine, lime zest and white pepper. It brings clarity, brightness and warming depth to soups, curries, broths, marinades and drinks.
Spice Zen’s certified organic Galangal Powder is sourced from leading organic growers and quality checked and hand packed in our gluten free Sydney facility in a recyclable amber glass jar to preserve its volatile aromatics and freshness. Finely ground and intensely fragrant, it blends seamlessly into curries, laksa bases, soups, pastes and marinades, delivering unmistakable Southeast Asian character.
A key seasoning in Thai curry pastes, Malaysian laksa and Indonesian rendang, galangal also shines in herbal teas, cookies, sambals, syrups and citrus-forward drinks. It pairs beautifully with lemongrass, kaffir lime, chilli, garlic, coriander, cumin, coconut milk and tamarind.
Flavour & Aroma Profile
Sweet, piney, citrus-bright and peppery with a clean, aromatic finish.
How to Use
Galangal is aromatic and concentrated. Start light and adjust to taste.
-
Use ½–1 teaspoon per 500 g vegetables, tofu, seafood or meat in curries and stir-fries.
-
Add ½ teaspoon to soups or broths for citrus warmth and herbal lift.
-
Blend ½–1 teaspoon into curry pastes, laksa bases or marinades with lemongrass, garlic and chilli.
-
Stir a pinch into coconut milk or tamarind sauces for brightness.
-
For herbal-style infusions, simmer ¼ teaspoon per cup of water with ginger or lemongrass.
Galangal deepens as it cooks, so allow it to simmer gently to release its full aroma.
