This deep red paprika-bright stew began as humble shepherd fare and grew into a symbol of Hungarian culinary identity. Slowly simmered in heavy bogrács kettles over open fire, goulash has always been about warmth, patience and depth of flavour.

At its centre is certified organic Hungarian paprika, sourced directly from Hungary, where organic production remains rare and carefully protected. Paprika defines true gulyás, giving it its signature sweetness, vibrant red colour and gentle warmth. Caraway and bay leaf add earthy structure, while warming spices round the blend without adding heat.

Milled in small batches at our gluten-free Sydney facility and sealed immediately after blending, this seasoning preserves the natural oils and rich aroma of just-milled paprika. The result is full-bodied, comforting and beautifully balanced.

How to Use

1. Hungarian Chicken Paprikash (Paprikás Csirke)

Ingredients

1.5 tbsp Spice Zen Goulash Seasoning
500 g chicken thigh fillets
1 tbsp Spice Zen Sunflower Oil
1 onion, finely chopped
2 tomatoes or 1 cup passata
½ cup sour cream (or coconut yoghurt for dairy-free)
Salt to taste

Method

Heat sunflower oil and sauté onions until soft.
Add chicken and brown lightly.
Stir in Goulash Seasoning; warm for 30 seconds to activate paprika.
Add tomatoes or passata and a splash of water.
Simmer 30–40 minutes until chicken is tender.
Stir through sour cream off the heat and serve with rice or potatoes.

2. Rustic Paprika Butter Beans with Vegetables

Ingredients

1-1.5 tbsp Spice Zen Goulash Seasoning
1 tbsp Spice Zen Sunflower Oil
1 onion, chopped
1 cup butter beans (cooked or canned)
1 cup vegetables (carrot, capsicum, zucchini, mushroom)
1 cup stock
Salt & pepper

Method

Sauté onion and vegetables in sunflower oil.
Add Goulash Seasoning and warm gently.
Add beans and stock; simmer 20–25 minutes.
Serve with crusty bread or rice.

3. Paprika Roast Mushrooms

Ingredients

2 tsp Spice Zen Goulash Seasoning
2 tbsp Spice Zen Sunflower Oil
400 g mushrooms, halved
Salt & pepper
Parsley or chives

Method

Toss mushrooms with oil and Goulash Seasoning.
Roast at 200°C for 20–25 minutes.
Finish with herbs and serve as a warm side.
