You might think that South Africa’s love of tea is a British import. In fact, South Africa’s go-to-cuppa is derived not from the spoils of the Empire, but from the native riches of the African bush.

Every day, millions of South Africans imbibe a comforting herbal brew, known as Rooibos tea (pronounced ROY-BOSS), made from the fermented leaves of aspalathus linearis, a shrub which grows in the mountainous Western Cape. Rooibos thrives in sandy soil and a dry climate and was probably used as a medicinal tincture and an energising “bush tea” for thousands of years.

If you are expecting something like classic cuppa the first time you try this caffeine-free tea, you might be in for a mild shock. With little in common with black tea, Rooibos is recognisable straight away by its brilliant red hue and slightly thick, creamy consistency.

With hints of honey in wood on the nose and full-bodied texture, the sweet steaming aroma of Rooibos is comforting to the senses. It possesses a sweet, nutty and earthy palate with a hint of caramel. Sharing many of the same health benefits of tea, the antioxidant-rich brew are considered to protect the body from cell-damaging free radicals and fighting allergies, asthma and acne.

Despite being caffeine-free, South African cafes often serve a “red cappuccino” - a milky, copper coloured beverage with cinnamon sprinkled foam top.

Cutting down on caffeine or just in search of a new day-time beverage? Rooibos can be savoured on its own or sipped alongside hot breakfast dishes, cheese, chocolate and cakes. The savoury, slightly coarse powder can also be used as a seasoning for soups and pasta sauces. You can also make a caffeine free chai with Spice Zen’s Masala Chai Spice Blend by substituting black tea with Rooibos.

Brewing Instructions: Use 1 teaspoon per cup and let it steep for 4 to 5 minutes. Milk is optional, as is sugar - Rooibos is subtly sweet on its own.

Loose leaf herbal tea.

Organic Ingredients: Rooibos tea.

No added sweeteners, caffeine tea, preservatives, flavourings, dairy, flour, gluten, nuts, salt, sugar
