Botanical Name: Trigonella foenum-graecum
Fenugreek is an annual herb native to the Mediterranean and India. Its leaves and seeds are utilised in a wide range of cuisines, including Indian, Turkish, Middle Eastern and North African.
Our organic whole Fenugreek seed is sourced from India and packed in a biodegradable, resealable stand-up paper bag.
Fenugreek seed is often ground to maximise its flavour (we also sell our own freshly Stoneground Fenugreek Seed) or soaked for several hours and made into paste. Once ground, the aroma is almost intoxicating, and you’ll notice a pungent spiciness with undertones of sweet nuts and a hint of maple syrup or burnt sugar.
The ground seeds are found in curry powders (such as Vindaloo and Sri Lankan fish curries), pickles, sauces, soups and flatbreads and in the Indian five spice blend, Panch Phoron. Fenugreek paste lends its bittersweet flavour to classic Middle Eastern desserts such as Helba and other sweet baked goods.
Fenugreek seeds are a rich source of minerals, vitamins and phytonutrients. In traditional medicine, they are used to aid in digestion and to increase milk production in nursing mothers.
Fenugreek goes well with Cardamom, Coriander, Cumin, Cinnamon, Cloves, Fennel Seed, Garlic, Pepper, Nigella Seed and Turmeric.
Organic Ingredient: Whole Fenugreek Seed.
