Description
Description
Golden, warm and boldly aromatic, this oil is a pure expression of mustard seed. Traditionally treasured across India, the Himalayas and Eastern Europe, mustard oil brings both silky heat and rustic depth to everyday cooking and modern cuisine.
Spice Zen’s certified organic Black Mustard Seed Oil is first cold-pressed in small batches at our gluten-free Sydney facility. It is pressed once only, slowly and gently at low temperature from certified organic black mustard seeds (Brassica nigra), then allowed to settle naturally using microgravity so fine seed particles rest without filtration or refining. This minimal-intervention process preserves the full aroma, warmth and character of freshly milled mustard seed.
When raw, it carries a bright, peppery pungency similar to cracked mustard and fresh wasabi. When heated, it softens into a nutty, earthy warmth with a smooth lingering finish.
It has a naturally high smoke point of approximately 249°C and a low freezing point of around minus 14°C.
From tempering and deep frying to cool-climate cooking, this oil delivers flavour, performance and authenticity in equal measure. Its signature warmth shines in the traditional Bengali dish Shorshe Bata, fish gently simmered in mustard oil and spices.
Artisan Craft vs Commercial Oils
Industrial mustard oils are typically refined, deodorised or solvent-extracted, stripping aroma and amplifying sharpness. Our oil is unrefined, unfiltered and bottled in the most natural form. Minimal intervention pressing preserves mustard’s natural volatile compounds that act as stabilising aromatics, giving first-press mustard oil a surprisingly resilient oxidative profile compared to mass-produced commercial seed oils.

Nutrient Profile
Cold-pressed mustard oil naturally contains monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, including plant-based omega fatty acids. It also contains naturally occurring allyl isothiocyanate, the compound responsible for mustard’s distinctive pungency, along with seed-derived antioxidants preserved through gentle first pressing.
Wellness Note
In Ayurveda, mustard is considered warming, stimulating and energising, traditionally used to awaken circulation and disperse stagnation. Its aromatic heat is culturally appreciated for balancing Kapha and grounding Vata, making it a vibrant companion in both kitchen and wellness rituals. Externally, it’s cherished for skin and scalp nourishment through Abhyanga massage, a ritual celebrating warmth, energy, and renewal. (Traditional cultural context only, not medical advice.)
