Spice Zen’s Brown Rice gluten free couscous is artisanal, stone ground, certified organic couscous and is made from semolina of brown rice grain. Like authentic traditional couscous, it is made from crushed brown rice grains and is not pre-steamed. It is a perfect alternative for wheat-based couscous for people with gluten intolerance or coeliac disease. It is a unique smart product that combines the authenticity of traditional couscous and the convenience of ‘instant couscous’.

Simple, humble, light and fluffy Couscous dish with origin from North Africa, is made from tiny steamed balls of semolina. A kitchen staple in Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, the Middle East and the Mediterranean region, Couscous is a national and celebratory dish in Morocco served under a meat or vegetable stew.

Couscous is the husked and crushed semolina (the hard part of the grain that resists milling). It is usually made with durum wheat. The traditional technique for couscous dish involved steaming the crushed couscous grain multiple times in a tall pot called a couscousière, fluffing it by hand till it was light and fluffy. However, commercially available couscous is usually steamed with flour and water and then dried and are instant and fast cooking couscous.

The brown rice couscous has a nutty flavour and can be cooked as a savoury or sweet dish for any time of the day - for breakfast, lunch, dinner, a healthy snack or lip-smacking dessert. You can cook it in a microwave, on a stovetop or in a couscousière.

Microwave method: For ¼ cup rice couscous, add 1 teaspoon oil, ghee or butter. Mix it in a bowl and then add ½ cup of boiling water. Microwave it for 1 minute, cover it and let it sit for 10 minutes. Fluff it up with a fork.

Stove Top method: For ¼ cup rice couscous, add 1 teaspoon oil, ghee or butter. Mix it in a pot and then add ½ cup of boiling water. Heat it over medium heat for 1 minute, cover it and let it sit for 10 minutes. Fluff it up with a fork.

Serve couscous with stewed meat or vegetables, Tagine of Chicken, Lamb or mutton, preserved lemon and olives or chunky onion Harissa sauce. Add toasted almonds, raisins, peas, chickpeas, dried fruits or compote of fruits. Add cooked couscous to the salads after chilling it. Sweetened couscous with bananas, almonds, raisins, milk, honey, cinnamon and nutmeg is great for breakfast. Go creative with our Spice Zen Rice couscous.

Oh my goodness, to have couscous again was absolutely wonderful. It was delicious. Preparation was exactly as suggested on packet. Fluffed up with a fork just like couscous normally would. I highly recommend this product.

Arrived overnight and met expectations. Packet seemed small but only a little is needed as it multiplies well when cooked. Very realistic - I added currents and pine nuts for a Moroccan flavour. Highly recommend.

  • My son LOVES this.

We found this at the Gluten-Free expo and have reordered it since...it's so delicious. My son is a coeliac, but we absolutely love it too...so fluffy and tasty and you can add different flavours to it, it works so well. Something different is always good to spice things up!

Got my rice couscous delivered on Sunday, and tried it on Monday evening, following the directions on the pack. I'm very happy to say it was delicious. I used it as a side for meatballs. I liked the texture and flavour. it's so good to find a gluten free substitute for wheat based couscous. I've tried a different supermarket brand made from corn, but it was not nice. I'd highly recommend this. thanks for making it. I'll be reordering the brown rice couscous for sure.
