Our authentic Berbere Spice Blend is a beautifully balanced combination of roasted and stoneground whole spices. Nutmeg, Cardamom, Cinnamon, Nigella, Ajwain or Carom seed (a pungent, thyme-like herb) and Cloves give our Berbere blend its distinct aroma, while Cayenne Pepper, Red Chilli and Black Pepper add intense heat.
This versatile Ethiopian spice mix combines sweet, spicy and citrus notes to create a complex flavour used to spice up everything from red meat to vegetables and fruits, imparting dishes with a warm red colouration and an amazingly fragrant aroma. A delicious dry rub for frying or grilling, berbere is also traditionally mixed with oil and red wine to make Awaze paste, used as a condiment or hot sauce at the table and added to the main course.
