Curry simply means any dish of meat or vegetables, cooked in a richly spiced sauce or gravy. Rather than relying on individual spices to flavour their dishes, Indian cooks employ a mixture of spices called masala. The ingredients in masala vary from dish to dish and region to region. ‘Curry powder’ as we know it, is a British creation, based on traditional Indian masala and shipped back to Britain to recreate popular Indian dishes in the faraway British Isles. The British later introduced curry powder to Japan, where it was adopted into the national cuisine.
Our Curry Powder – Medium is a spice mix of 16 premium quality organic spices, made by using traditional techniques of hand roasting and stone grinding to retain maximum freshness and keep the valuable, nutritional properties of their essential oils intact. It is warm, spicy and complex with a profound depth of flavour, generous with savoury, sweet, warm, earthy and hot spices and a medium to mild heat.
Another variation of Spice Zen’s Curry Powder is the Madras Curry powder, which is hotter and typical of the southern part of India. We also have a Chilli Free Curry Powder for people with nightshade allergy.
This curry spice mix can be used as an all-purpose salt free seasoning and is commonly used to flavour curries, soups, stews, sauces, stir fries, marinades, meat, noodles and vegetables. You can also use it in hamburgers, scrambled eggs and potato salad.
It makes an ideal dry spice or can be stirred into paste or gravy for a convenient but tasty curry recipe using tomato puree, yoghurt or coconut milk. Temper the spices in oil or ghee to get the best flavour or mix it with wet ingredients. Once cooked, curry is best rested for a few hours (even overnight), to truly bring their complex, individual flavours to the foresight.
Use Spice Zen’s Curry Powder to make a wide range of Indian, Sri Lankan, Nepalese, Malaysian, Thai curries and Singaporean noodles.
