Spice Zen’s organic Black Mustard oil is made by us in Australia using certified organic, premium Black Mustard seeds. This amber-coloured oil has a silky heat, sharp, pungent aroma and a very addictive earthy, rustic flavour.

 

The first cold-pressed unrefined oil is produced from raw black mustard seeds which are cold-pressed only once in a cork-screw oil press. The freshly pressed oil is rested to let any solid particles sediment by gravity and then bottled in its purest natural form without the use of any chemicals, preservatives or processing aids.

 

Virgin Black Mustard oil is popular in Asian cuisine and a key ingredient of Northern & Eastern Indian cuisine. It has been used in India, Rome and Greece for thousands of years for cooking, Ayurvedic healing, traditional practices and cosmetic applications. As it has a high smoke point (approximately 249 °C), it is great for deep frying. This warming oil has a low freezing point (approximately -14 °C), making it ideal for use in cold climates.

 

Best for sautéing, deep frying, pickling, salad dressing, flavouring and hot seasoning blends. Ideal with strong flavoured or “sticky” vegetables and meats. Use as a finishing oil, especially for delicate seafood or sautéed green vegetables to amplify the flavour. It is used in classic Bengali dish ‘shorshe bata’- a fish dish cooked in mustard oil.

 

In India, this kitchen staple cooking oil is usually heated till it smokes to neutralise the allyl isothiocyanate that gives this oil its distinct pungency and then heat is lowered to the desired level. Spice Zen’s Mustard oil is naturally less pungent so does not require this process.
